  • Grapes are juicy, smooth-skinned berries that grow in tight clusters on woody plants called vines.

  • Grapes can be black, blue, green, purple, golden or white, depending on what kind they are.

  • Some grapes are eaten fresh and some dried as raisins, but 80% are crushed to make wine.

  • Grapes are grown all round the world in places where there are warm summers and mild winters, especially in France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, Romania, Georgia, South Africa and California.
  • The Ancient Egyptians made wine from grapes around 5000 years ago.

  • Grapes are made into wine by the process called fermentation.

  • Grapes that are for eating fresh are tailed table grapes and are bigger and sweeter than wine grapes. Varieties include emperor, red Tokay, green and black Ribier.

  • Grapes grown for raisins are seedless. The best known is Thompson’s seedless, sometimes called the sultana.

  • Grapes are grown from linings. They start to give fruit in three or four years and the bear fruit for a century.

  • Grapes have been cultivated since the earliest times. Purple grapes like these will be used to make red wine.
