Grapes!!!
Grapes are juicy, smooth-skinned berries that grow in tight clusters on woody plants called vines.
Grapes can be black, blue, green, purple, golden or white, depending on what kind they are.
Some grapes are eaten fresh and some dried as raisins, but 80% are crushed to make wine.
Grapes are grown all round the world in places where there are warm summers and mild winters, especially in France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, Romania, Georgia, South Africa and California.
The Ancient Egyptians made wine from grapes around 5000 years ago.
Grapes are made into wine by the process called fermentation.
Grapes that are for eating fresh are tailed table grapes and are bigger and sweeter than wine grapes. Varieties include emperor, red Tokay, green and black Ribier.
Grapes grown for raisins are seedless. The best known is Thompson’s seedless, sometimes called the sultana.
Grapes are grown from linings. They start to give fruit in three or four years and the bear fruit for a century.
Grapes have been cultivated since the earliest times. Purple grapes like these will be used to make red wine.
